COO/Director of Operations

Position Description

Responsible for the overall operations of the church and will vision cast, lead, manage, supervise, and minister to the entire church staff under the supervision of the Senior Pastor.  His main focus is working with the Leadership Team and Senior Leadership Team to help create and implement the vision of the senior staff and the Elders. He is expected to contribute to the team spirit of the staff through fellowship, encouragement, cooperation, prayer support and other appropriate ways the church and the Senior Pastor. The incumbent sets goals, monitors work, issues reports and evaluates results to ensure organizational objectives and operating requirements are met and are in line with the needs, mission and strategic plan of the organization.

Organizational Status

This position reports to the Senior Pastor - Provides interpretations and makes recommendations concerning the organization’s strategic direction and vision as well as the financial, administrative and operational needs and solutions to the Senior Pastor, Senior Staff, Para-church Leaders and Board of Elders.

Working Relationships

The position provides assistance to the Senior Pastor and executive staff in the general church operations.  Works directly with the Senior Pastor, Senior Staff, Board of Elders and Para-church Leaders to develop and implement organizational vision and strategy.  Considers and analyses the implications of the organization’s vision, strategy and decisions by individual areas on the whole of the organization (financial, operating, human resource, legal and information services).

Roles and Responsibilities
Vision and Leadership - Staff
  • Continuously evaluates and recommends appropriate changes to the organization’s operations and support services to facilitate and reinforce the effectiveness of strategic plans.  This includes realigning key business processes, the organizational structure, management practices, communications and the development and deployment of staff.
  • Functions as a member of the Senior Staff, working closely with the Senior Pastor and the Elders to develop agendas and report on staff issues as appropriate.  
  • Reports monthly to the Elders on issues relating to staffing and strategic planning.
  • Projects future administrative staff needs, making recommendations to the Senior Pastor and Elders regarding staff additions or changes in ministry responsibilities.
Human Resources
  • General management of all aspects of organizational H.R. requirements
  • Development and implementation of basic human resource functions
  • Consolidates organization hiring policies including rationalization and management of overall organizational staffing, salary administration, placement, etc.
  • Oversees job description creation, adjustment and review
  • Performance review strategy development and oversight
  • Professional development and training program creation and recommendations
  • Ensures adherence to federal, state and local labor requirements
  • Provides risk assessments for current and future activities
  • Provides recommendations and risk assessment of employee benefit plan and administration
  • Serve as ex-officio of Personnel Committee meetings
  • Provides leadership on searches and hiring procedures for new employees in accordance with the Employment Policies and Procedures
  • Oversees and participates in interview process of candidates for open positions
Finance
  • Responsible for financial management monitoring including all revenues, expenses, investments and designated funds
  • Advises key leadership on financial matters assessing and explaining long and short-term implications for the organization of alternatives and decisions
  • Develops and maintains policies and controls for financial functions
  • Oversees the preparation of standard and ad hoc financial reports required for responsible fiscal management.  This includes budget process, cash flows and financial forecasts

  • Assesses and analyzes the financial, administrative and operational implications of proposed actions and decisions by individual areas and departments on the whole of the organization
  • Provides financial risk assessments for current and future activities
  • Serve as ex-officio member of Finance Committee.

Qualifications and Requirements
  • A passionate love for the Lord and a desire to serve in support ministries
  • Individual must possess a minimum of 15 years of proven leadership and management with a high skill and competency level demonstrated
  • A functional knowledge of information services development and application
  • Proven success with strategic planning and project management
  • Ability to lead and motivate diverse groups of people – volunteers, employees, peers, leadership and ministry associates
  • Thinks creatively and strategically to successfully mediate and negotiate with internal and external groups
  • Able to effectively manage a diverse staff, multiple priorities and tight time constraints
  • Exhibit excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills
